Since the advent of comfortable living areas outdoors the main material to emerge in terms of affordability and versatility is polyethylene (PE) Wicker or resin wicker. This man-made substance has opened doors with design and versatility never seen before with traditional materials such as wrought iron and teak. You can now find a vast array of outdoor patio furniture like daybeds, sectionals, dining sets and accessories all made from PE Wicker.

As we get accustomed to this new material, we need to get to know its limitations particularly when it is paired with glass as is the case with dining tables, coffee tables and side tables. Many resin wicker tables have tempered glass tops, and while this glass is hardened to resist breakage this does not mean that it is unbreakable or scratch proof. In the event of breakage, the glass will shatter into small cubes rather than large jagged sheets to minimize the risk of injury.

Some simple measures can be taken to ensure that the glass and wicker have a long and harmonious existence.

  • If at all possible place your glass topped wicker table in a spot that is not exposed to direct sunlight, like under a gazebo or covered patio area to provide protection.
  • Always use an insulated heat mat when placing warm pots or serving containers on the table.
  • Use coasters and place mats at all times. Prolong Wicker Life
  • Don't place heavy and sharp objects on the table top as this can cause undue stress to the glass.
  • Keep your glass topped tables away from heat sources such as a fire pits, outdoor heaters or BBQ grills as this will cause premature drying out of the wicker and cause shock to the glass.
  • Avoid hosing down your furniture if it is in direct sunlight or during periods of extreme. Glass is susceptible to sudden temperature changes, therefore rapid cooling of a hot surface may cause it to weaken over time.
  • Always use protective patio furniture when your table is not in use, not only will this help guard the glass from the sun's powerful rays but will also keep maintenance to a minimum.
  • If not using your patio dining set or coffee tables for an extended period of time during the winter months store in a garage or shed, be certain to wrap the glass in clean blankets to avoid scratches.
